Baltimore results for the Concept 2 Fall Rowing Challenge
(Stolen from an email written by Sean Morrison)

Success! I'm happy to report that our Killer Bees team represented BRC fantastically with 13 individuals surpassing the requisite 100k meter mark in the Concept 2 Fall Rowing Challenge!

Long before oars ascended upon Boston, these dedicated few were ascending (and descending ...) their erg slides in the name of fitness, insanity, free ergs, competition, and compulsion making the Baltimore Rowing Club place 30th overall out of more than 250 participating groups. BRC was the 4th highest ranking rowing club to participate with 20 members collectively pulling in more than 2.5 million meters overall. The 13 Killers are:

01 - 321,885m - Saul Kerpelman
02 - 279,265m - Chris Steele
03 - 255,600m - Ashfaq Ahmed
04 - 238,000m - Niels Lium
05 - 212,682m - Michael McGuirk
06 - 196,457m - Robert Binner
07 - 155,563m - Michael Chin
08 - 140,955m - Jeff Wingfield
09 - 133,174m - Christopher Sean Morrison
10 - 113,680m - Zibi Turtle
11 - 110,589m - Mark Baskin
12 - 108,000m - Tony Yuen
13 - 100,539m - Fran Appler

As can be seen, more than a couple killer bumble bees buzzed forward to the challenge, with more than a few surprise stingers by the end. Saul Kerpelman continued to hold a commanding lead in the second half finishing up with more than 320k meters with four others surpassing the admirably impressive 200k meter mark!

The quartet of Chris Steel, Jeff Wingfield, Zibi Turtle, and myself took on the challenge of erging a marathon on the fatefully coincidental Saturday of the Baltimore Marathon. All four pulled in the excruciating 42,195 meters together while enduring the mental mind fudging and painful bum numbing over the course of several hours. It was painful. It was surreal. An old friend of mine put it best: "You must be outta yo damn mind!"

Congratulations are deserved all around for a job well done to all of the 13 finalists. If you see them around the boathouse, maybe give them a hug, offer a banana, or suggest a good therapist. Go Baltimore!

Cheers!
Sean

Women's 4+ appears in The Baltimore Sun.
The Baltimore Sun has printed a mention of our women's 4+ and their conquests at FISA.

At the World Masters Rowing Championships in Vienna, Austria, a Baltimore crew - Laurie Pipitone, Zibi Turtle, Sandi Burt and Beth Lawrence and coxswain Marion Penning - placed first in the Women's Masters B 4+ (sweep boats with four rowers and coxswain) on Friday. They went on to win the Masters C 4+ Saturday.

2009 FISA World Masters: Saturday results.
The sun may have set over Vienna, and across Baltimore racing at the FISA World Masters, but if you turn your heads east, with the sun at your back, you can see the bright lustre of Baltimore medals.

Saturday, today, was simply more of the same. The mighty four of Zibi Turtle, Sandi Burt, Beth Lawrence, and Laurie Pipitone, ably steered by Marion Penning, has once again captured gold, with literal boatloads of open water, and reportedly in dreadful weather. Following that effort came the single of Marc Daemen, who won his heat by a slightly ridiculous twelve seconds of open water.

Stay-cations seem to be in season this year, and with Labor Day approaching, pack a lunch, gas up the car, and take a ride around the beltway, stopping at the houses and homes of each of our noble participants -- Sarae Busch, Janice Bonner, Sandi Burt, Marc Daemen, Gia Davis, Emily Erbelding, Beth Lawrence, Sophie Lin, Marion Penning, Laurie Pipitone, Katie Thurstin, and Zibi Turtle -- many of whom return at some point on that day of rest. Others came before, and others will follow, but take time to thank them for bringing Baltimore racing to the front page where it belongs.

Go Baltimore!

Friday, September 4.
Friday started early with competitive coach Marc Daemen jumping into a composite double with Markus Wingmann of RGG Waiblingen for event 211 Men's E 2x. The pair finished second in heat 2 with a time of 3:35.32. Compared across the nine heats for event 211, the pair finished 9th in a field of 60 boats.

Baltimore also fielded a boat in each heat of the two heats of event 215 Women's B 4+. The first heat saw Gia Davis, Emily Erbelding, Sarae Bausch, and Janice Bonner follow Sophie Lin's calls to a fifth place finish. The second heat followed with Marion Penning steering Zibi Turtle, Sandi Burt, Beth Lawrence, and Laurie Pipitone to first place in the heat by eight seconds, and first place overall by two seconds. First place! They hand out gold medals for those sorts of things.

Next came Marc Daemen taking part in another composite boat (with Charles Windeknecht, Nick Holland, and Anthony Mitchell) and racing in event 221 Men's D 4x. These four men finished second in their heat to the overall event winner, holding off a field of 41 boats to take second overall.

Friday finished with Marc Daemen and Chuck Windeknecht joining friends Nick Holland (Occoquan International) and Tony Toth (Calgary RC) for Event 240 Men's B 4x, heat 6 (doing business as race 356). The quad finished fourth in their heat with a time of 3:15.37.

Recall the lineup for event 221 Men's D 4x form earlier in the day -- Marc, Chuck, Nick, and Anthony Mitchell (Wycliffe Sculling). Now, split that four in half and scatter the results across Event 245 Men's C 2x. Nick and Anthony took to heat 12 (race 375) and Mark and Chuck followed in heat 13 (race 376). Nick and Anthony rowed to fourth place in their heat with a time of 3:37.25, and Marc and Chuck took fourth place in their heat with 3:41.22.

Baltimore invades Vienna: Day one.
At various points in the last week, twelve of your teammates found a way to Vienna, Austria, for the 2009 FISA World Rowing Masters. Racing began yesterday and continues through Sunday.

Today marks the start of boats racing under the Baltimore flag:

Race 117, Event 106 - Women's B 8+, Heat 1. 3:04pm (9:04am local)
This event ran just after nine this morning; eyes will scour for results as soon as they are available.

Race 137, Event 109 - Men's C 1x, Heat 16. 4:24pm (10:24am local)
Marc Daemen takes to a single later this morning.

Overall, our contingency includes Sarae Busch, Janice Bonner, Sandi Burt, Marc Daemen, Gia Davis, Emily Erbelding, Beth Lawrence, Sophie Lin, Marion Penning, Laurie Pipitone, Katie Thurstin, and Zibi Turtle.

A Baltimore event schedule for the rest of the week is at the bottom of this message. Full event information is available at http://www.rowing.vienna.info
If you don't have any high school German to fall back on, click on the "World Rowing Masters" logo that loads within the menu on the left and a number of bilingual items will appear. When watching the clock, remember that Vienna is six hours ahead of us here on the east coast.

Local rower and famed Olympian Jamie Schroeder to sell Olympic garb this weekend!
From local rower and Olympian Jamie Schroeder

I am donating much of my Olympic and national team gear this weekend to raise money for Baltimore charities. This Saturday I will be at the St. Bartholomew's Church annual Rummage Sale and Flea Market, with a large amount of rowing gear! I will be there when the sale begins, Saturday at 9:00 am and will be happy to meet rowing supporters and sign anything or take pictures.

I was hoping to forward this to the BRC list, to encourage any of them to come meet me, and of course to get some team USA gear.

Please have anyone forward this flyer to any rowing related email lists in the Baltimore area!

Summary: 150th Schuylkill Navy Regatta.
150th Schuylkill Navy Regatta.
Saturday, June 14.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
http://www.boathouserow.org/rega08/snr08.html

The following note is brought to you by competitive rower Beth Lawrence.

Congratulations to rowers at the Schuylkill Navy. We had a good showing, with several first place medals including Agne and Ellen in their singles, Marc and Chuck in their double, and the Women's Masters 8+ (Laurie, Zibi, Beth, Gia, Emily, Amy, Paula and Heidi, with Rachel as cox). There were several other "close ones". It was a fun day, and the weather really held out for us!

And now, a few words from competitive rower and club treasurer Paula Merkle.

Agne Pakalinskyte, Ellen Kloss, and the womens masters 8+ (boat C) all got lovely medals at Schuylkill Navy Regatta yesterday. I may never have another chance to row up to grandstands dock in 8 in Philadelphia again, so it was really great. John and Veetus were there at grandstands (obviously, the two had high hopes for this boat, which they kept to themselves until the race). They helped hand out the medals, John especially, with the biggest grin I'd seen on his face in a while! Veetus had a lot to do with coaching that boat and was clearly happy.

Three of the women immediately hot-seated into quad and did respectably (second of two boats, but close enough for tired legs). Another four of us would have hot-seated into another quad but, well, we forgot the quad. We had the seats and riggers, though ...

As for hot-seating, we were talking about whether to scratch 8 or quads if things got too close. Veetus said, as diplomatically as Kiwi Steve ever would, "Quads suck, keep the eight." (He must be taking lessons from Steve.)

Baltimore RC Executive Committee scheduled to meet this Wednesday, June 11.
The executive committee of the Baltimore Rowing Club is scheduled to meet this coming Wednesday, June 11, at 6:30pm. All are welcome to attend.

This month, the meeting will be held at Gaudreau, Inc., 810 Light Street in Federal Hill. The 810 building is just south of the Engine 2 firehouse at the corner of Light and Montgomery. (Look for the picture of John Travolta.)

There is limited free parking behind the building; use Churchill Street to access the lot. Federal Hill is normally awful for street parking, but at least the Orioles are on the road that day. The #64 bus runs up and down Light Street, and the #1 runs nearby. The Hamburg Street and Camden Yards light rail stops are a longer walk away.

If you have any agenda items or issues for discussion that you would like to share ahead of time, please send them to secretary@baltimorerowing.org

Summary: Stonewall Regatta.
Stonewall Regatta.
Saturday, May 31.
Washington, DC.
http://www.dcstrokes.org

Thanks to competitive rower and open coach Patrick Martin for the basis for this summary.

The weather report for the DC Strokes Stonewall Regatta was pretty ominous as team members loaded up the trailer the night before. When the trailer arrived Saturday morning for the coach and coxswain meeting, there were already strong, sustained gusts blowing directly down the course, which meant rowers had race against the wind.

Event 1 - Mens Open 1x.
Baltimore RC got off to an auspicious start by taking the top two spots in this event: John Haines had a convincing first place finish at 00:04:17, followed by the newly converted Capital RC rower Damon Ellingston at 00:04:58. Both rowers reported strong wave action trying to take the oars, induce crabs, or just generally flip the boats. Overall, this race was tough going.

Event 5 - Mens Masters 1x.
This event saw the weather degrade even further. Baltimore RC head coach Marc Daemen took 1st (00:04:50) but had to fight through even more wind, one which began to shift to a crosswind.

Event 7 - Womens Open 1x.
These singles were all about Baltimore ... literally. The women had a pretty close grouping and handled the conditions well. The field finished with Annie Couwenhoven at 00:04:40, Megan Szymanski at 00:04:48, Ellen Kloss 00:04:54, and Agne Pakalinskyte at 00:05:13.

Event 11 - Womens Masters 4+.
In a large field of boats, Laurie Pipitone and her brave crew came in second place, with an overall time of 0:03:58 and after a last-minute heart breaker. This was a close finish decided by the sprint.

Event 20 - Womens Masters 4x.
Baltimore again dominated the field: the Megan Szymanski quad ultimately won out over the Danielle Langton quad (0:04:29 and 0:04:42, respectively).

Event 21 was a second heat of the Womens Masters 4x; Baltimore’s Paula Merkle quad took the top spot (0:04:32) over two Potomac boats.

It was around this time that our original author, Patrick, was set to row in events of his own ... but a tornado watch, warning, or other technically important but decidedly ambiguous weather term was issued along. Severe lightning and thunderstorm alerts were also issued. Under suspect skies, boats for the mens masters 4+ events (including our intrepid Patrick) launched, only to be immediately recalled. The remaining entries for the day were scratched,

Overall, this was a good event where the club was well represented. Sadly, the weather had other plans.

Mayor Dixon announces the start of restoration at Swann Park.
Baltimore mayor Sheila Dixon and Dave Wickersham of Honeywell announced that construction of a new and improved Swann Park will begin this month as Honeywell starts restoration of the park.

"The restoration of Swann Park would not have happened without a strong partnership between Honeywell and the city. Honeywell stepped up," Mayor Dixon said today at a groundbreaking ceremony at Swann Park. "I want to thank Honeywell for stepping up and for fulfilling its commitment. We look forward to the new and improved Swann Park."

Honeywell and Baltimore City have worked in partnership to restore the 11-acre park.

Wickersham, who is Honeywell's Direct of Global Remediation Services, said, "We look forward to seeing the park once again full of activity and available to all those who have spent so many years enjoying it. The users of Swann Park will have a wonderful facility when the work is done."

Honeywell expects to complete the Swann Park restoration and related park improvements by August. The park is scheduled to open next spring after the city completes its work.

Honeywell will prepare and seed the ball fields, make water and electrical improvements and build foundations for lighting, dugouts, fences, bleachers, pedestrian pathways and roadways before turning the park over to the city later this year.

Baltimore High School Invitational this Saturday.
This Saturday, April 12, will be the Baltimore High School Invitational. The regatta course runs from the beach to the first day marker past the bridge.

Saturdays are big practice days for us. Normal practice patterns and locations may need to be modified, including (but not officially) rowing in the direction of Fort McHenry and the Inner Harbor.

Dockmasters will be present to make sure everyone makes efficient use of the docks. The Coast Guard will also be patrolling this regatta.

Make sure you (and your coaches) have working launches and communication with each other/shore in case of emergency. Rowers should expect a full parking lot. Parking attendants will be on site between 6am and noon to direct traffic/trailers.

Scrimmage between Roland Park and Bryn Mawr.
On Saturday, April 19, the Boathouse at Middle Branch Park will host a home scrimmage between Roland Park Country School and the Bryn Mawr School.

These crews both call Middle Branch home, so trailer space should not be a concern; however, extra cars for parents and spectators may find their way into the parking lot.

More information will be posted as it flows in.

Competitive Program organizational meeting: this Saturday, March 8, at 7:30am.
The Competitive Program will begin water practices on Monday, March 10, weather and equipment permitting. Prior to this start date I would like to hold an organizational meeting on Saturday, March 8 at 7:30am, at the boathouse, in the erg room. The agenda for this meeting will included discussions on membership, practice times, equipment, regattas, and expectations that the rowers have for the program as well as expectations that the program has for the rowers. There are no requirements for attendance. All members are welcome.

I recognize that this meeting takes place during the second shift of Saturday morning practices. That second practice will be canceled. Unfortunately, the recently announced start time for boathouse opening conflicts with out regularly schedule and posted Saturday workout period.

At meetings adjournment you will be expected to assist with boathouse opening.

Baltimore RC Junior accepted to Junior Women's Sculling Camp.
A huge wave of congratulations to Baltimore RC junior Alison Medlyn. Alison was accepted in the Junior National Sculling Camp, and will be heading to Arizona for a week in January.

This camp is two-fold: an instructional camp that also serves as an early identifier for National Team Scullers. Athletes who were invited had to submit an application and erg times.

This is a great step for Alison and we are all very proud of her!

Marc Daemen named BRC head coach for 2008.
This past week, the executive committee named Marc Daemen as head coach of the Baltimore Rowing Club for 2008, to serve as "senior ombudsman" and mediate issues among the coaching staff. We thank John Kloss for his many efforts to improve BRC the past two years. Based on John's outstanding performance as competitive coach, we are hoping to expand the morning program to allow more rowers to work with him. We will have more information to you by February 2008.

Marc is an internationally competitive sculler who has been active here at BRC for 10 years. This past season, he was the primary coach of the evening sculling program, and he will continue this role for 2008. Marc has coached and mentored rowers from all our programs and we are looking forward to having him work with the coaches, executive committee, and membership to make BRC the best community boathouse in the Mid-Atlantic!

This change is largely administrative. All 2007 staff have been invited back in 2008 to resume coaching their respective programs.

Oar painting.
Now that pretty much everyone is off the water, I plan to go through the remaining sweep oars and get them sanded up and primed / painted. This is ideal as they can harden all winter.

Looking for about a half dozen people that want to learn and help; it's not rocket science though. It will have to happen in short bursts over a couple of days due to drying times.

Planning to start next Saturday, December 1 around 9 or 10 am.

If you're interested in helping drop me an email (link in the footer below). Having a palm sander also helps but, of course, isn't necessary.

Boat rigging clinic this Saturday.
From the desk of head coach John Kloss.

For those of you seeking bow certification, one of the requirements is a knowledge of boat rigging-- how to rig, when to rig, and why you'd want to change the numbers in the first place.

I will be offering certification for the rigging component of bow certification to those who come to boathouse closing. This offer assumes that you will actually help out at the closing, otherwise I won't check you off as having completed the requirement.

I will be covering the following:
  • How to change and set the spread. What that means. How that changes the fulcrum of the level (oar) and the load on the rower. How that changes the arc of the oar at the catch and finish.
  • How to change the outboard pitch. What that means. How that affects the angle of attack at the catch and the angle of release. What that means for ease of entry and extraction and how that effects the angle of the oar height wise.
  • How to set the pitch to stern. What that means. How that effects the angle of attack at the catch and the angle of release. What that means for ease of entry and extraction.
  • How to change the height. What that means for position of the handles in relation to the rower. How that effects the rowers pull through and recovery.
  • How to change the foot stretchers. What that means with regards to the work-through, the arc of the oars, the angle at the catch and the release. How that effects the load on the rower, the position of the rowers body at the work-through and the muscles engaged at the work through based on foot stretcher position. How the angle of the foot stretchers effects the center of pressure on the foot boards. What changing the shoe plate up or down on the stretcher means and how that effects the center of pressure on the foot boards.
  • How to adjust the length of the oar. How to set the inboard and outboard. How to maintain a consistent ratio for load. How the length of the oar effects the position of the fulcrum at the blade (you do know that there are two fulcrums on the oar, that the oar is not a simple lever but a manifold, right?).
And a bunch of other stuff related to the above, but definitely more than how to put a rigger on and take it off again.
John Kloss.

Included are the pictures from Stuart and Sean taken back in June. Thanks to everyone who was patient in waiting for them to get processed and uploaded.

There ended up being about 877 pictures overall after processing, and some of them are really great shots. It's really fun to see the elite crews whose victories this year were just getting starting.

As always, be sure to rank your favorite photos!

Planning your trip to the Head of the Occoquan.
Basic Information
  • Trailer loading is at 8:00am this Saturday, November 3.
  • Know the schedule and be on time for launching and racing. Know the course. Parking is $10 for regular cars; trailers, buses, and larger carpools will have their fee waived. More information is available at the HOTO website:
    http://www.rowobc.org/hoto.html
  • Follow park rules (no grills, dogs, or alcohol). More information is on the Sandy Run website:
    http://www.nvrpa.org/parks/sandyrun/
  • Also, remember to pay your boat captains for both the trailer fee (see below) and the registration fee for any boats you are racing in. Cash is recommended, small bills helpful. To make life easier, each boat should have one person collecting money; trailer fees go to the head coach, registration fees go to the person who actually registered the boat.
  • Hungry? Meals, drinks and snacks are available both dates. Bring cash; proceeds will help support South County High School.
Traffic Concerns
If you are headed across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, prepare for the new traffic patterns on I-95/I-495 (the Capital Beltway) both in Virginia and Maryland, beginning this weekend. There will be major delays near the bridge while lanes are realigned and resurfaced.
Consider taking I-495 West "the other way" instead.

Comcast SportsNet to air a Head of the Charles Regatta highlight show.
Throughout the race weekend, Moody Street Productions was filming every race in the regatta. Comcast SportsNet then squeezed the footage into a highlight show, and it will air on their New England affiliate on these dates:
Saturday, October 27 - 1:30 AM (EST)
Monday, October 29 - 6:00 PM (EST)
Unfortunately, the Baltimore/Washington affiliate of Comcast SportsNet will have locally flavored programming during those times. In the meantime, make some crab dip, drive over to that friend or coworker you know who has an insane digital or satellite package, and renew your acquantence.

Head of the Occoquan: Fun racing, good people, colorful trees.
A group of BRC rowers, novice graduates, friends, family, and wayward gypsies will be getting together next Sunday, November 4 to travel down to Sandy Run Regional Park in Virginia to support the Baltimore RC contingency at the Head of the Occoquan. Contact Karen Pfarr -- kmpfarr@verizon.net -- for more details. The plan is to meet Sunday morning at the boathouse, or somewhere nearby, to carpool back and forth. Details to follow as the head count grows.

Head of the Charles 2007 results.
The HOCR was a harder race this year for clubs. The rule changes allowed any club to apply for any and all events in the sweep divisions; this meant that many of the club events where stacked with competitors who did not get the championship draw. Time results that would have won us a medal last year where not quite enough to win us a medal this year ... in most of our events.

Men's Club 4+
18th out 44 with a time of 18:10.858, %8.9 off the winning time. I believe this was one of the stacked events. Regardless, the men had a very good row, beat a lot of crews, and gave us the lock with this event next year.

Men's Masters 4+
13th out 22 with a time of 19:15.940, %8.99 off the winning time. In order to obtain the lock on this event, these gentlemen would have needed to be in the top 50% of the competitors. We just missed that lock by 6 seconds.

Women's Masters 8+
25th out of 31 with a time of 20:13.056, %16.28 off the winning time. This type of regatta and competition is very new to these ladies and I think they did very with keeping poise and focus throughout this race. Unfortunately, we miss the lock on this event, too.

Men's Masters 2x
Marc Daemen and his doubles partner Charles Windeknecht placed 9th out of 23, with a time of 18:24.866, %5.27 off the winning time. For sculling events a guaranteed entry is given if you are within %5 of the winning time with preference on the draw given at %10 and %15. Marc and Chuck just missed the lock, but have a good chance for the draw next year.

Women's Championship 2x
Ellen Kloss and Christine Bevacqua placed 19th out of 29 with a time of 20:44.14, %13.38 off the winning time. This gives these ladies a preference on the second draw for this event next year.
I'll note that the winning crew was the US Women's National Team 2- for next year's Olympic Games. Ellen and Chrisi are true lightweights against many other open national team rowers, so I think there results are rather good considering.

Women's Club 4+
This was a hard fought event by a fairly green crew and so I'm very pleased with their results considering. In a field of 32 the ladies placed 2nd with a time of 19:10.820, %0.01 off the winning time, a mere 0.08 seconds. Yes, you read that right, BRC medaled in the Women's Club 4+. Of course, we got the lock on this event, but these women are not allowed to row it next year due to their finish placement and regatta rules with regards to club eligibility. This is a call out to other women who would like to compete for slots in this boat next year. Consideration starts now.

Congratulations to all competitors. The regatta was truly enjoyable and one that I look forward to attending next year.
John Kloss.

P.S. I have to repeat this -- BRC got 2nd in the Women's Club 4+. Here's to live'n with big, mighty women. You make BRC proud.

Attention scullers: change in practice schedule.
We have coaching/racing conflicts for the rest of the Saturdays in October. Therefore, we would like to reschedule practices, moving from 8:00am-10:00am on Saturday to 4:00pm-6:00pm on Sundays. This should allow us enough light to still get some long rows in.

Certified scullers are welcome to take out boats during the Saturday time slot as well.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Honeywell, in conjunction with the City of Baltimore, today submitted a comprehensive plan to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) for restoring Swann Park, which will protect human health and the environment. The proposed cleanup includes removing 3,200 cubic yards (a minimum of 240 truckloads) of contaminated soil, and covering the entire park surface with a clean-soil layer that is two feet deep. MDE will review the proposal and hold a public meeting to solicit community input. Once MDE selects a final remedy Honeywell will work with the city and the agency to develop specific work plans, which should take approximately two months. Honeywell is committed to work on an expedited schedule and intends to complete the cleanup by late spring 2008.

Evan and I have discussed it extensively and are in agreement. Current light levels are unsatisfactory from a safety standpoint.

Everyone has been very good about lights and conscious of the traffic patterns. This is much appreciated and has kept us safe. Actually coaching rowers becomes nearly impossible under these lighting conditions and we are relegated essentially to double checking to make sure everyone stays safe.

Normally we push the season a just slightly further than we're comfortable with (up until the time change). Given the new, later time change this year (after Halloween rather than before), we're not going to make it to the time change.

Novice rowing started their two week extension last week, and we are going to follow a similar timeline. This week will see our last normal open rowing practices -- Tuesday, October 9, Thrusday, October 11, and Saturday, October 13.

This means (including tonight) just two more night practices. If there are two boats and two launches, one boat will stay with each launch. If there are more boats than launches, boats will stay together in groups, each with a launch.

Head of the Occoquan is coming up (Sunday, November 4), and I am aware we have some entries in this race. After Saturday the 13th, we will move weeknight practices inside, but we can still have Saturday practice outside. I would expect anyone racing HOTO would be at both indoor and outside practices.

To complicate things, Evan and I will be away next weekend (October 20) for the Head of the Charles in Boston. We will play this by ear, having practices covered where possible, and potentially dropping one or two. HOTO will be the last day of open Rowing for 2007.

For HOTO, so far I have a men's 8, a number of masters men organizing, and 2 women interested. I'd like to get 2 more solid confirmations from women and put together a set 4+.

As we're in the middle of the fall racing season, the executive committee is hard at work planning for the winter and for 2008. All EC meetings are open to Baltimore RC members, and those that are interested in running for a position on the 2008 Baltimore RC Executive Committee are expressly invited to attend our October meeting.

The October EC meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 17, in the large conference room at Maryland Nonprofits -- 190 W. Ostend Street, Suite 201, Baltimore, MD 21230 -- from 6:30pm until 9:00pm. We will run through regular club business first, then discuss the positions and candidates for the EC positions before adjourning for the night. If you have any questions regarding the duties of each position, ask the current 2007 member; contacts for each can be found at http://www.baltimorerowing.org/people

The following EC positions are voting positions: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership, Social, and Boathouse Manager. Additionally, there are the positions of Safety Coordinator, Merchandising, Juniors Liason, Webmaster, and Volunteer Coordinator, which are non-voting positions that are historically appointed by the President from those individuals expressing an interest. All EC Positions are one-year, volunteer terms running from January 1 through December 31.

Elections for the 2008 executive committee will be held upstairs in the Great Room at the boathouse on Wednesday, November 14 from 6:30pm until 8:00pm. In early November, the Secretary, Membership Chair, Vice-President and I will certify members for the vote and publicize the candidates for each position. Voting privileges are outlined in the membership area of www.baltimorerowing.org. Following that, voting BRC members will then have the opportunity to cast their votes by email or at the general meeting. The October EC meeting will serve as the call for candidates.

Being a contributing member of the EC is rewarding. You learn a lot about operating a non-profit organization, working with others, fostering growth of rowing at all levels, and you also learn a lot about yourself.

If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them. Good luck this fall racing season, I'll be on the water cheering you on!

Head of the Ohio results.
(Results submitted by head coach John Kloss.)

For the Women's Open 4+, in a field of 22 entrants, BRC placed 2ND.

For the Men's Open 2x BRC placed 1ST, beating the 2nd place finisher by 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

For the Women's Open Lightweight 2x BRC placed 1ST. It should be noted that Ellen and Chrisi were not satisfied with beating all the Lightweight crews so they decided to row through all the Open crews as well, placing them as the fastest Women's 2x at the regatta.

For the Women's Open 8+, in a field of 15 entrants, BRC placed 2ND.

Considering that the sweep lineups for the ladies have been rowed exactly twice, Head of the Ohio included, I find their results promising with regards to the upcoming Head of the Charles regatta.

Wye Island Regatta.
(Comments and summary swiped with thanks to open sweep coach Patrick Martin.)
The Wye Island Regatta hosted each year by Annapolis is probably the most bizarre regatta I have ever seen. Maybe I should say "unique" and not "bizarre". There is a place for everything, and everything has its place: you can show up with pretty much any type of craft, and this race has a category for you. As a result, lots of people come from all over the place ... some even in motor homes.
In addition to the unusual boats, the regatta also has a really unusual course. The race literally takes you around an island. The course is about 13 miles, much of it in fairly rough water. This year brought some pretty high wind, and I was debating scratching the BRC entries when the officials decided to alter the course. The new course brought the rowers only though the "protected" side of the island; this greatly reduced the length of the head race course to "only" 8 miles, with a 180 U-turn in the middle.
Baltimore had a nice showing, which makes a lot of the effort in coaching, repairs, rowing, and rigging by all members of BRC worthwhile.
It took host Annapolis RC a little while to compile a lot of the results, so they trailer and crews headed back to Baltimore while I waited for outcomes and collected medals. By the end, I had literally a huge stack of them; I looked and felt kind of like a jerk standing a crowd of people looking for results with a pile I could barely hold. (I ended up needing a bag.) Still, being a jerk rarely feels that good.
Men's Master's 1x - Dan W - 1:00:58.35 - GOLD
Men's Master's 2x - Walter et al - 1:00:27.63 - GOLD
Mixed Master's 4x - Chuck, Emily, Alfredo, Ann - 1:13:23.04 - GOLD
Mens Master's 4x - Adrian, Tom, Hasnain, Lou
Unfortunately they took a pretty serious wake on and the boat was totally filled, ending their race prematurely. Well handled though gentleman.
Men's Master's 8+ - Gavin, Stuart, Tom G, Dave, Jeff S, Eric B, Jeff E, Mark B, Sunil (cox) - 0:55:58.76 - GOLD
A nice finish for an overwhelmingly novice boat.
Women's Master's 8+ - Joann, Kira, Zibi, Vicki, Dina, Cara T, Lamia, Olisa, Karen Pfarr (cox)
The women didn't win gold as they were edged out by Alexandria (I think). They have found a lot of swing and control lately and responded well to some last minute substitutions in the lineup. Moving well, especially for another overwhelmingly novice boat. I expect good things in the near future.
Mixed Master's 8+ - Mike C, Patrick, Laurie P, Gia, John R, Jeff D, Meg S, Kathy, Brigitte (cox) - 0:54:18.57 - GOLD
Passed several boats on the course and held a very nice line.

The inaugural Head of the Fort regatta was Saturday, September 8, right here in Baltimore and hosted by your very own Baltimore Rowing Club. The races themselves covered a near-5,000m course, starting at Fort McHenry and ending just past the Hanover Street Bridge. The small but fun regatta had beautiful weather and decent water conditions. We raced mainly against ourselves and Chester River, and the results are posted here:
http://www.baltimorerowing.org/regattas/fort.php
Next year's regatta will be bigger and better. Thanks belong to everyone who planned, attended, competed, or volunteered, as we put head racing on the Patapsco back on the fall schedule!

(Special thanks to Cindy Ching and Kathy Nickel for organizing the event on such short notice, as well as to our coaches who gently reminded their rowers to register and compete. A special thanks to Niels Lium for showing up before the crack of dawn and getting all the cinder blocks and buoys out; to Mike deVera, Mike Chin, and Bo Weisheit for helping set up the course; and to Patrick Martin, Meg Sikora, Tom Wolfe, John Radtka, Chuck Edwards, and Karen Pfarr for collecting buoys and putting everything away -- including all the launches. Huge food thanks to Jan Cookson for breakfast and Jeff Ditter for lunch.)

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to become a mentor for the Baltimore Rowing Club Juniors (BRCJ) Program. The response has been really encouraging. We had an organizational meeting tonight and are beginning to structure the program. We will hold a MENTOR MEETING on Thursday, August 30, 6:30pm at the boathouse to discuss the program and brainstorm ideas for the kick-off, tentatively set for September 11 or September 14. Prior to the meeting, interest sheets will be sent to all mentors so we can match you to a Junior athlete.

Here is a description of the program. If you are still interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Amy Kleine! Sunil Soprey will be co-coordinator of this program for 2007-2008, but we'll need input and help from all of the mentors to make this a success.

Canadian Henley
  • Women's Senior Lightweight Single
Ellen Kloss, 5th out 6 in heat
  • Women's Senior Lightweight Double
Ellen Kloss and Chrisitine Bevacqua, 6th out 6 in heat
  • Men's Senior Double
John Haines and Andrew Swiatowicz, 5th out 6 in heat
  • Women's Junior Single
Annie Couwenhoven, 3rd out of 6 in semi final, missing 2nd by 1.5 seconds.
  • Women's Masters Double
Beth Lawrence and Tracy Ruckwardt, 1st out 4 in final, winning by some large amount of open water. This one was actually boring to watch because Beth and Tracy had already won the race after the first twenty strokes. We actually wondered if they had false started because these ladies were so fast off the line.

It should be noted that 'Senior' for Canadian Henley means over 23 and in general, really, really fast. For example, in Ellen's heat she had Ashley Blake, 2nd place finisher in the Women's Intermediate Lightweight Single at US Rowing Club Nationals, Rebecca Smith, 3rd place finisher in the Women's Lightweight Double at the Pan American Games Trials, Meghan Sarbanis, 3rd place finisher in repechage in the Women's Lightweight Single at the US Rowing Nationals, and Helen Brewer member of the Great Britain University Rowing Team's Women's Quad which will compete at the European Union Sports Association Rowing Championships. Furthermore, the top two finishers in Ellen's heat went on to the finals.

In general, everyone at Canadian Henley is really good and to compete at that level BRC rowers will have to step up the work. Fortunately, everyone who attended this year is committed to doing so. Hopefully others will be joining them.

- Thanks to John Kloss for submitting these results.

Baltimore Rowing at the 2007 Capital Sprints - July 21, 2007
Baltimore represents at the 2007 Capital Sprints
BRC made a nice showing Saturday at the Capital Sprints. As a club, we are now being taken very seriously with some excellent results. The weather was borderline perfect, and everyone and everything came home in one piece.
BRC lead off the day with a ''shock and awe'' campaign taking top spots in all 3 of the first events.
  • Men's Open 2x – FIRST, 3:40.7. Held onto first place through tough sprint competition for a half second victory. Paul Conlin, Evan Rea.
  • Women's Open 4x – FIRST, 3:47.7. Open water, and lots of it. Beth Lawrence, Lauren Bolin, Megan Szymanski, Tracy Ruckwardt.
  • Women's Masters 4x – FIRST, 4:02.5. More open water. Linda Pazdalski, Emily Erbelding, Amy Kleine, Dru Schmidt-Perkins.
  • Men's Open 8+ - Second, 3:39.9 (winning time 3:25.8). The open men came in second but still very much in the hunt against a crew from College Park. Having never practiced a full lineup, and having four novice-eligible rowers, this was an entirely respectable result.
  • Women's Open 4+ - Third, 4:39.3 (winning time 4:02.3). Having just finished up their novice eligibility and moving into "open" racing, the women's open 4+ finished a respectable third in a full heat of rowers, and continues to row better and better.
  • Women's Masters 1x - Second, 4:58.9 (winning time 4:45.1). Wendy Shields.
  • Men's Novice 4+ - Second, 3:51.
An absolute heartbreaker, and probably the best race I've seen in a long time. The men's novice boat, made up of open rowers with an average weight in lightweight territory, finished second by quite literally a bow ball in one hell of a race. Whatever time gap the official results list will surely be a measure of stopwatch thumb reaction time and not reality. Stroke seat Sam Lauber later filled in for an injured Marine (torn ACL) to stroke the Marine Corps novice 8 (they have 3 weeks of water practice) to a second place finish.
  • Men's Masters 4x – Second, 3:30.
Another absolute heartbreaker. The men (all open and sculling participants) were passed on the last 1-2 strokes of the sprint for a very very strong second place finish. Another great race to watch.
  • Women's Masters 2x – Second, 4:05.8 and Third, 4:53.7 (wining time 4:03.1).
Tracy and Beth took second, and Emily Erbelding and Dru Schmidt-Perkins took third.
  • Men's Masters 1x – Third, 3:51.5 (winning time 3:29.2).
Dan W finished a close third after a hot seat from the Men's 4x.
  • Men's Masters 4+ - Fourth, 3:25.2.
    Alfredo, Tom, Gunther, and Adrian.
  • Men's Masters 4+ - Fourth, 3:29.5 (winning time 3:10.2).
Mike Chin, John R, Ashfaq, and Jeff.
  • Mixed 8 – FIRST.
A group of open rowers and coaches took home the final win of the day in a full heat of Capital eights, despite interference the entire way down the course. Even covering the extra real estate due to interference, the 1K time was something like 3:11.4.
Quotes from the day
  • "I'm not seeing any action! Where are the Anacostia men!" – Race Announcer
  • "The BRC coach (Patrick) walks away with his arms raised in victory after BRC's third straight victory and misses his boat crash into the (finish line) bridge!" – Race Announcer
(The boat did not end up hitting the bridge, though from the announcer's table, it looked like close.)
  • "I'm tired, I'm stinking. And I'm happy" - BRC Rower

Dixon Announces the Start of the Swann Park Restoration

Mayor Sheila Dixon and Dave Wickersham of Honeywell today announced that construction of a new and improved Swann Park will begin next week when Honeywell starts restoration of the park.
