Baltimore Rowing Club Newsletter
January 18, 2008.

From a magazine with a rather cynical cover I learned very recently that for pond skating the proper costume is brown homespun with a fur collar on the jacket, whereas for private rinks one wears a gray herringbone suit and taupe-colored alpine. Oh, barren years that I have been a skater, and no one told me of this!

Latest News.
Ice skating social tonight.
Tonight the Baltimore RC will meet at the Northwest Ice Rink for fun and ice skating. Northwest Ice Rink is in the Mount Washington neighborhood of Baltimore City. The skating session starts at 8:30pm and runs until 10:30pm. Adults (and accompanied juniors) are encouraged to meet at the nearby Mount Washington Tavern around 7:00pm. Directions to the rink can be found on the rink's website at http://www.northwesticerink.com The Mount Washington stop of the Baltimore Light Rail is very close; for station and schedule information, check out http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/lightrail/

The Great Baltimore Burn.
The next installment of the Burn will again be at the New Era Academy, a hop, skip, and fence-jump away from the boathouse. Mike Chin will be coordinating this event.
A barely-used Concept2 erg will be raffled after the event. Tickets will be $20. Two more reasons to bring extra cash: the concessions stand (run by the members and parents of the Baltimore RC Juniors program), and great Baltimore RC swag.
Also, as in prior years, the ergs used during the event will be for sale immediately afterward at a discounted price. After only a few hours (and a few thousand meters) of use, these ergs truly are "like new". Plus, you will not have to pay any shipping charges.
If you are interested in volunteering at this event, or buying an erg afterward, please contact Mike Chin or Kathy Nickel for details. Hours you spend here can be applied to discounts on your 2008-09 membership.

Executive committee meets, greets.
Your elected executive committee met earlier this month to close out items from the 2007, and turn its attention to 2008 expenditures and expectations. A summary of the calm, collected discussions will appear in the next edition of this newsletter.
Stolen From the Web
Take a look at this article, as stolen from the University of Delaware. The article profiles masters rower Linda Pazdalski, and describes how her daughter Ashley tricked her into joining moving to the world of competitive rowing.

Winter Training
Official erging is underway.
The schedule and suggested workouts can be found on the Baltimore RC website:
http://www.baltimorerowing.org/programs/winter.php
The workouts shown run up to the Baltimore Burn next month.
Erging sessions will be held early mornings and early evenings. Unless otherwise indicated -- juniors have certain time chunks reserved -- all sessions are open to all paid members. Open, novice, competitive -- we suffer together. There is no exclusion policy. Attendance at all sessions is not mandatory, but you should be present for the entire session you do decide to attend. Erging may be painful and tedious, but the suffering is easier to swallow when done in groups.
For some exercises -- especially on Monday -- a yoga mat or large, fluffy towel will come in handy.
If you arrive to practice only to think the room is full, stick around; overcrowding will be handled swiftly and efficiently.

Erg email discussion list.
If you're interested in erging, particularly in the evening with Jim, we STRONGLY recommend you sign up for the erg email list. Erging information will be sent out via the list, as well as through the website.
To add yourself to the erging list, visit this link:

Updates to the morning winter training schedule will be posted to our website:

Log your erg meters.
It helps the club to log meters you row at concept2.com. If you don't recall the exactly meters or time from a row, log your best guess. The log uses an honor system.

Membership requirements for winter training.
If you are not an annual member, and have not yet signed up for winter rowing, please do so immediately. (Two caveats exist: if you are a seasonal member who ended up paying for all three seasons -- spring, summer, and fall -- your membership has been converted to an annual membership, and you too will be allowed to attend winter training without an additional fee. Also, if you signed up for the continuing novice program, you too are eligible for winter training at no additional charge.)
If you have any questions, please bother our membership department at membership@baltimorerowing.org. Knock loudly. Registration through Ronin Racing has been discontinued, so the check and paper waiver method is on the verge of a comeback.
Important Reminders
Boathouse alarm.
If have and use a boathouse key, please remember to disarm the security system inside the building, or, at the very least, check to make the security system for our area -- dubbed "Warehouse" on the console -- is set to "Off" as you enter and move about. We have used our handful of mulligans, and from now on, each false alarm incurs a fine from the city.

This edition of the Baltimore Rowing Club newsletter has been brought to you by Adrian Breeman, on the backs and necks of great minds before. Help also comes from the creative criticisms and witticisms of rowers like you. Submissions and corrections are always welcome; give secretary@baltimorerowing.org or http://www.baltimorerowing.org/about/newsletter.php a try.

See you on the water.
