TO stand within a gently gliding boat,
Urged by a noiseless paddle at the stern,
Whipping the crystal mirror of the fern
In fairy bays where water-lilies float;
To hear your reel's whirr echoed by the throat
Of a wild mocking-bird, or round some turn
To chance upon a wood-duck's brood that churn
Swift passage toward their mother's warning note,--
This is to rule a realm that nevermore
May aught but restful weariness invade;
This is to live again the old days o'er,
When nymph and dryad haunted stream and glade;
To dream sweet, idle dreams of having strayed
To Arcady, with all its golden lore.

LATEST NEWS.
Steve Perry awarded the Matt Ledwith Award.

Johns Hopkins crew head coach Steve Perry was honored as the Matt Ledwith Coach of the Year. Coach Perry was presented the award earlier this month during the 71st Annual Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.

A 1980 graduate of Washington College, Coach Perry has guided the rowing program at the Johns Hopkins University for the past twenty years. During that time, Coach Perry has guided the Blue Jays to medals in the Knecht Cup, Dad Vails, and Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. In 1989, just as the program matured to varsity status, the men's lightweight four won a gold medal at the Dad Vail and was invited to compete at the Royal Henley Regatta in Canada. In 1997, Coach Perry's women's four was invited to compete in the first NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, finishing 12th. Four years later, the women's varsity eight ranked as high as 8th in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Poll. His Hopkins crews have produced numerous couches, two national team members, and one Olympian. (The University announced the crew programs would be discontinued at the end of this year.)

No stranger to other rowing programs in the area, Coach Perry founded the Loyola College crew program in 1981. He moved on to resurrect rowing in the city of Baltimore as a founding member of the Baltimore Rowing Club, serving as club president from 1983 through 1985. Later, in 2005, he helped establish the Notre Dame Prep rowing program. In the midst of these successes, his alma mater honored him for distinguished service in 1991.

In addition to leading his collegiate teams, Coach Perry still finds time to compete along the east coast as a masters sculler.

The award honors Matt Ledwith, himself a driving force in rowing in the Philadelphia region for almost 30 years and was involved with the Dad Vail Regatta Organizing Committee. Ledwith passed away suddenly in 2005.

Learn to Row Day 2009.

Baltimore RC will host National Learn to Row Day activities on Saturday, June 6, 2009 from 9:00am through 3:00pm.

Amy Kleine is once again handling volunteer assignments and herding new rowers around. Spring novice graduation.

The first group of novices for this year are about to wrap up their session. We will be holding a graduation ceremony and barbecue on Thursday, May 28. Come out and welcome the next wave of Baltimore RC members. Of course, no novice class would be complete without a scratch regatta, so we invite all members to be at the boathouse by 8:00am on Saturday, May 30 for a morning of racing excitement. Refreshments will be provided.

For those novices seeking to continue their rowing careers with Baltimore RC, we invite you to investigate our Continuing Novice program. Watch in awe as your additional registration transforms into an effortless absorption into the warm arms of the open rowing program.

Spring seasonal memberships are about to end.

If you are registering by season and have so far paid for the spring season only, this is a reminder that your membership will end on May 30. The summer session starts on June 1 and runs through the end of August. Don't miss any water time, or the chance to race in the Charm City Sprints: register for the summer season today.

Charm City Sprints to be held June 20.

This year's Charm City Sprints will be held on Saturday, June 20. The racing slots and volunteer opportunities are nearly endless; reserve some time that day (or the night before) to help. Keep the tradition alive and help us show everyone along the eastern seaboard how Baltimore puts on a race. Volunteer specifics will follow soon, but if you have your heart already set on a specific race or volunteer task, hit regattas@baltimorerowing.org

A subtle change of subject made through the use of bold formatting.

We are pleased to announce a shift to phosphate-free soap throughout the boathouse. So, after you lose the rock-paper-scissors match to determine which seats wash the boat, you can at least feel better knowing that the soapy rag in your hand will no longer accelerate the growth of algae in the Patapsco River. This also makes the bucket water safer to drink (though water from the hose is just as close and won't leave a pesky aftertaste).

REGATTA RESULTS.
Baltimore High School Championships. Sunday, May 3.
The juniors from Annapolis wrested control of the Honeywell Cup by the slimmest of margins. Official scores are still being checked and validated, but congratulations to the juniors here in Baltimore for their valiant defensive effort.
Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Jr. Regional Championships.
Saturday, May 16 through Sunday, May 17. Worcester, Massachusetts.
Hosted by the Quinsigamond Rowing Association. http://www.qrarowing.org
(Advance thanks to the juniors coaches for their exhaustive summary of the regatta's events.)
"The sea was angry that day, my friends."

This past weekend members of the Baltimore RC Juniors program raced at the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapionships in Worcester, Massachusetts. The weather was windy, rainy, and altogether ugly, but through these trials members of our team qualified to represent the Mid-Atlantic at the USRowing Youth National Championship Regatta, which will be held in June on Harsha Lake just outside Cincinnati, Ohio. Specifically, please raise your oars to the following Juniors:

Women's Pair: Sara Sherrer, Kaity Lindsay Women's Single: Alison Medlyn Men's Single: Nick Pazdalski

Other highlights of the weekend included a lightweight double advancing to the finals of their event; a single finishing better than half of the pack in a closely-stacked field; a novice quad soaking in valuable experience of higher level competition, holding their own while enjoying what they called their best race of the season; and a varisity double clocking the second-fastest time of any Mid-Atlantic crew.

A huge round of congratulations to these Juniors rowers as they continue to warm the shells with victories as the rest of the club eases into summer competition.

NIELS' NOVICE NOTES.

Novice 1 class is now in week six; some have been in a four, mostly rowing four or six at a time with all eight on the square as a final stepping stone/challenge before feathering. A new item this year for the three novice classes is that the second class session is held at the rowing tanks. It was a big help in getting everyone familiar with blade work and basic rowing movements before being on the water and dealing with balance issues. Those who made it to the tank session quickly were able to row four at a time in the shells, and work through the pic drill sequence. Many quick learners in this group. Hope to get all the way to the Harbor during the three rows over the Memorial Day weekend. Have already visited three of Baltimore's tourist attractions: the Barge, the Fort and the River.

We also welcome Mary Sheehan as a novice coach.

Amazon.com links are always open, even on (and not just for) Christmas.

In an effort to generate additional income, your Baltimore Rowing Club entered into an affiliation agreement with Amazon.com. Our website at http://www.baltimorerowing.org is subtly plastered with links to Amazon.com products, and when these links are used during an eventual Amazon.com purchase, a percentage of each purchase will be deposited into club coffers. The products displayed on our website are related to rowing, but are merely suggestions; you do not need to buy any of these specific items for your purchase to help the club; nearly everything purchased through Amazon.com will go toward helping the club.
Just make sure to start at http://www.baltimorerowing.org/amazon before you get busy. (If you are not sure what to buy, Amazon.com gift certificates also count.)
