Below is a list of skills necessary to become bow certified.
- Know and understand the 'Four Oars' Rule.
- Know where to find current water and air temperature.
- Know how to address hypo and hyperthermia.
- Know the traffic patterns and marks including:
- Glass beach pattern
- North beach pattern
- Basin to inner harbor and back
- Know the points of safe harbor for the above patterns.
- Bow a single through all of the above traffic patterns including to the inner harbor and back.
- Be able to dock a single:
- In calm water
- In strong winds
- Be able to get back in a single during:
- Rough water
- Calm water
- Be able to bow a double including:
- Calling and keeping point
- Calling and achieving both rate change and control
- Bowing the double through all of the above traffic patterns including to the inner harbor and back.
- Be able to dock a double:
- In calm water
- In strong winds
- Be able to get back in a double during:
- Rough water
- Calm water
- Be able to rig a sculling boat without damaging the boat.
- Know what the basic rigging adjustments do including foot stretcher, track, rigger, and oar adjustments.
